NYFW SS20: Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs - The Light of the Season

In recent years I've heard a lot about the struggles of Marc Jacobs as a brand. Back in 2015 the diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs was shut down and a lot of the stores were closed but this seems to have marked a change for the brand and also given them the kick up the arse that they needed. He also stopped working on Louis Vuitton (in 2014) which seems to have given him the time to really curate his own brand.

I think Marc Jacobs has really blossomed in the last few years as a brand and this runway was an amazing way of closing out NYFW.

Spring/Summer 2020

Sticking with confidence and dressing to display a mood, which has been a theme of this years NYFW; Marc Jacobs brightened up the runway with the closing show. With eccentric and loud colours, smiling models, the show certainly picked up the mood.

Last season for Marc Jacobs was all about volume, this season is very much more about tailoring. It is less experimental, more wearable with a hint of something fun. For once I feel like there was a good marriage between wearable and experimental which Marc Jacobs doesn't often do.

There were two outfits which perfectly displayed this balance to me. The look that I would 1000x wear and love is the look that Gigi Hadid wore. Apparently there was a wardrobe malfunction as she was supposed to be wearing long socks and shoes which did not materialise on the runway but I think this outfit was perfect without them. It is a light blue shift dress that looks almost knitted but I believe it is patterned from the boobs down. I feel like the lack of shoes really shows the buoyancy of the show and I have to say, the hat just finishes it off.

The more experimental look that I love this season harks back to the volumoious outfits from last season. The dress is a gorgeous feathered gown with a bold red hood and varying shades of pink, orange and red feathers in patches all over the dress. Honestly there is little to no shape in this dress but I just think it is a work of art to look at and it must have taken an age to make.

Marc Jacobs closed NYFW with colour and positivity. Will we see this enthusiasm as we go into London Fashion Week? Considering the political climate we are currently in, I am willing to assume not and I am sure we will see more divisive runways but NYFW certainly opened the month with something a little bit more light and fun.

Based on This Show, What Should You Add to Your S/S Wardrobe?

Sixies Mini Dresses - I adore the dress that Gigi Hadid wore and it is the exact style of dress I love for the Summer. I love the longer short sleeves and the patterning that starts under your boobs. I will definitely be looking for a dress similar to this for my Summer wardrobe.

Be Experimental. Marc Jacobs is sort of known for either doing incredibly experimental runways or doing something more wearable. I would say this season was more wearable but it certainly had element of experimental, such as the feather dress. Maybe it is time to get a little bit more adventurous when it comes to event outfits?

Hats are Back. The case for the hat has well and truly been won by the fashion industry over the past couple of years. Dior bought back the bucket hat last season and this season we have already seen satin caps in the Tom Ford runway and now Marc Jacobs has paired every sort of hat with every single look. Is it now time to start looking for hats to go with our outfits?

A Smile is Your Best Accessory. It is rare you get to see the personality of the models walking a runway. I think a lot of brands see them as coat hangers but I love seeing when the models enjoy themselves and also their personality. Instagram models like the Hadid Sisters, Kendall Jenner and even Cara Delevingne are the sales people for these brands outside of the runways and most people will see them on Instagram so why not bring a little bit of that to the runway. Fashion is not as serious as everyone makes it out to be.
